Information handled by the app
On-device information
Your profile, pantry, shopping list, meal plan, preferences, favorites, collections, recipe history, custom recipes, notes, and custom recipe photos are stored on your device. CookThisToo uses this information to provide recipe discovery, personalization, planning, and cooking features.
Custom recipe photos
Photos you add to custom recipes are stored locally on this device. They are not included in iCloud sync and do not automatically appear on another device.
Private iCloud sync
When you enable iCloud Sync, your profile, preferences, allergies, favorites, disliked and tried recipes, ratings, notes, favorite collections, and custom recipe text and metadata can be stored in your private CloudKit database. Apple operates iCloud and CloudKit under its own privacy terms. The developer cannot browse this private database. Deleting synced data removes CookThisToo's private CloudKit records before clearing the corresponding local account data.
Apple Intelligence features
Apple Intelligence Features are off by default and appear only on eligible devices. When you turn them on, CookThisToo can interpret recipe pages and photos, understand natural-language recipe searches, review recipes, adapt instructions, explain recommendations, and suggest pantry substitutions. These requests and results are processed on your device using Apple's system language model. CookThisToo does not send this content to the developer or a third-party AI provider.
Text recognition for a recipe photo also runs on the device using Apple's Vision framework. Recipe translation uses Apple's Translation framework. Apple may download required model or language files as part of providing these system features.
Recipe link import
When you import a recipe link, CookThisToo connects directly to the website address you enter and downloads that page. The website may receive ordinary connection information, including your IP address and the app's recipe-importer user-agent, under that website's own privacy policy. The imported recipe becomes your private, editable custom recipe and is not published or contributed to CookThisToo's built-in catalog.
Advertising and purchases
On iPhone and iPad, the free version uses Google Mobile Ads and Google User Messaging Platform. Depending on your region, choices, device settings, and Google configuration, Google may process device and advertising information, an IP address or approximate location, product interactions, diagnostics, and performance information after any required consent choice. After any required Google privacy message, CookThisToo requests App Tracking Transparency permission before starting Mobile Ads. If you allow it, Google may use the device advertising identifier to deliver and measure more relevant ads. If you decline, every app feature remains available and Google does not receive the IDFA from CookThisToo.
A non-consumable Apple in-app purchase can remove ads permanently on iPhone and iPad. CookThisToo Plus is an auto-renewable monthly or annual subscription that unlocks premium features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and removes ads on iPhone and iPad while the subscription is active. Eligible new subscribers may receive the introductory trial displayed on the purchase screen. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through the subscriber's Apple Account.
Apple processes purchases and subscriptions. CookThisToo receives product, transaction, eligibility, and entitlement status but does not receive your payment-card details. Purchases can be restored on another supported device using the same Apple Account. The Mac version does not display ads.
To evaluate the purchase experience, CookThisToo keeps aggregate monetization event counters on your device. These counters contain no timestamps, account or advertising identifiers, recipe or ingredient data, or free-form text, and they are not transmitted to the developer or a third-party analytics service.
Permissions and Apple system features
- Reminders: requested only when you choose to export a shopping list to Apple Reminders.
- Notifications: requested when you use a cooking timer so it can alert you while the app is not visible.
- Photos: the system photo picker gives CookThisToo only the image you select for a recipe or recipe import.
- Spotlight and Siri: recipe search, shortcuts, and suggested actions use information already available to the app. Siri actions that change your pantry, grocery list, or meal plan require the Apple Intelligence Features setting to be on.
Support communications
If you email support or send a recipe issue report, the developer receives the address you use and the information you choose to include. Do not include passwords, payment information, or sensitive personal information.
How information is used
- Provide pantry matching, recipe discovery, personalization, meal planning, recipe import, on-device assistance, sync, purchases, system integrations, and support.
- Display and measure advertising in the free iPhone and iPad version through Google Mobile Ads.
- Diagnose app and service issues based on information you voluntarily provide to support.
CookThisToo does not sell your profile, pantry, shopping list, custom recipes, notes, or photos.
Retention and deletion
On-device information remains until you remove it, clear account data, or uninstall the app. Private CloudKit records remain until you delete synced data through the app or your iCloud account. Custom recipe photos remain device-local, so keep separate copies of important photos before uninstalling or changing devices.
Service providers
- Apple Privacy Policy for iCloud, CloudKit, App Store purchases, Reminders, Notifications, Photos, Vision, Translation, Apple Intelligence, Spotlight, and Siri.
- Google Privacy Policy for Google Mobile Ads and consent messaging.
- The recipe website you choose to contact when you import from a link.
Your choices, security, and changes
Where required, advertising privacy choices are available from the Account tab. You can turn Apple Intelligence Features and iCloud Sync off at any time, and you can delete local and synced account data there. Reasonable safeguards include on-device processing, private CloudKit storage, and HTTPS for network connections, but no method of storage or transmission can be guaranteed completely secure.
This policy may change when app features, service providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date above will be revised when material changes are published.
